    作为一位广东本土艺术家,杜忠健极少受到艺术圈中风尚的影响,常以“费劲”的身体力行去探索作品的深度,力求简洁明晰,我认为这种摒弃花样的直白是一种少有的个人品质。杜忠健对发光体总是有一种执着,在2015年“观察社”的个展上,杜忠健曾经用霓虹灯拗了五个词组:爱、选择、认真、坚持、成败,作品的形式日常,甚至可以说是普通,但却在字义与霓虹光线的结合下散射出诡异的气氛,带出一种思辨的味道。这五个词组可以互相联结对应,变成一种行为的原因和结果,这其中似乎承载着艺术家从困顿的生活中带来的难题。时隔三年,艺术家结婚生子,我对他的进展充满好奇,于是就与他约定了这个展览。

    此次展览,光仍然是作品中的重要元素,展览由四种材料构成:水浸木、霓虹灯、切割石和绸缎画。我们选择了其中一件作品的名字作为展览的主题:“是岸”。这件作品是由阳江的特产水浸木用阳江黑漆反复刷抹直至锃亮,据说这种木材沉浸水中几百万年,一朝碳化就有打捞上岸的可能,最后制成昂贵的家具。在沼泽泥塘中唯有独特质地的木头才能碳化并打捞上岸,杜忠健将之视为一种升华的过程,而我却认为这是一种注定的结果。另一件作品是用霓虹灯拗成两条莫须有的公式:O+O=∞(无限重零)以及OXO=◎(O的平方归零),这两条公式完全不符合数学规律,但从直观视觉上来看却完全合理,我们因此得到一种有关“合理性”的模凌两可的答案。这件作品和旁边一块被机器切割成半的石球互相照应,这个球体因切割而摊开为两个圆形切面:一个立体的“零”因切割而成两个平面的“零”。最后的“无限之象”是用丝绸作画布画的画,隐隐反射室内的光线,画上作一喜一悲两位运动员的背影,悲与喜在抽离了其语境之后呈现出一种抽象的效果。

    以上种种,可以感觉到艺术家在之后的几年,找到了关于如何自处的答案。


    Du Zhongjian, a local Cantonese artist, rarely follows any trend of the art world but often explores the depth of a work through “painstaking” personal practice in pursuit of brevity and clarity; such straightforwardness, in my point of view, is a rare personal character. Somehow persistently, Du Zhongjian’s been making art with illuminants. For example, in his 2015 solo exhibition held in Observation Society, Du Zhongjian assembled neon lights into the shapes of five Chinese words: 爱(“love”), 选择(“choice”), 认真(“earnest”), 坚持(“persistence”) and 成败(“success or failure”). Such a usual or even ordinary form, when haloed by the marriage of the words’ meanings and the neon lights, renders an uncanny yet philosophical atmosphere. Interactively, any pair among the five can form the cause-and-result of an act, which seems to imply some problem generated by the artist’s weariness in life. In the past three years, the artist has got married and had his child, and, out of curiosity about his art journey, I invited him to do this show.

    Light is still an important element of this show, and the four component materials are ebony, neon lights, cut-apart stone and silk painting. We entitled the exhibition after one of the exhibits – “Hither”. It’s a work made of Yangjiang ebony which has been repeatedly brushed with black lacquer for a shiny finish. It’s said that the wood has to first soak in water for millions of years and, hopefully, will be salvaged once carbonized and eventually be made into expensive furniture. In a marsh, only wood of unique quality can carbonize and be salvaged, which Du Zhongjian views as a process of sublimation while I think to be a destined story. Another work is a product of neon lights in the shape of two groundless formulas: “O+O=∞” (infinite zeros) and “O×O=◎” (0 squared is 0); they totally violate mathematical logic, but intuitive visual perception says that they are entirely reasonable, hence an ambiguous answer about “rationality”. To add to the piece, a stone ball cut in half by machine is placed beside it with their cross sections upward: a 3D “zero” has been divided into two 2D “zeros”. Ultimately, the “Infinite Scene” is a painting on silk that slightly reflects the light in the room and presents a view of two athletes’ backs, one happy and the other sad, and the two sentiments assume an abstract effect after being extracted from their context.

    From the above, we can see that the artist has found his answer about how to treat himself in the last few years.

    Du Zhongjian (b. 1980, Yangjiang, Guangdong, china) graduated from the Oil Painting Department, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. His past solo exhibions include "Throw a stone to ask for a road" (Huangbian Station, Guangzhou, 2014) and "I do not know, but I want to" (Libreria Borges Institute of Contemporary Art Xiaozhou Mutual Help Space, Guangzhou.2014).
