Honeybees have thrived for 50 million years, each colony 40 to 50,000 individuals coordinated in amazing harmony. So why, seven years ago, did colonies start dying en masse?  This is not simply a problem because bees pollinate a third of the world’s crops. Could this incredible species be holding up a mirror for us? We‘ll invite Chaihuo member Roger to share how to protect bees in a high tech way on May 8th 7:30 pm. Click "Read More" to sign up!

The insects and wild bee pollinator populations have suffered an extinction event. Scientists began warning of this more than two decades ago. Unfortunately, this has a huge negative effect on human food security. The reason for that is about 70% of our food relies directly or indirectly on the pollination of crop flowers. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) placed a value in excess of US$235 billion on global food produced relying on pollination. Currently, the US dollar value of all the honey, wax, propolis and royal jelly produced worldwide is approximately $2 billion. So it turns out honey is not at all important, however making sure the surviving honey bee colonies under human management to not go extinct is extremely important.

Why are bees and insects dying out?

There is no clear consensus, however most likely a combination of the effects of herbicides, pesticides and a large number of beetles, moths, wasps, microbes, viruses. Pesticides are chemicals designed to kill insects. The global use of herbicides has practically eliminated the wide variety of weeds bees need in order to survive in the wild. One particular pest, called the Varroa Mite is extremely infectious and it weakens and then kills bee colonies.

“Someday we shall look back on this dark era of agriculture and shake our heads. How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons?” - attributed to Dr. Jane Goodall, the respected primatologist and anthropologist.

What has been done so far?

Commercial bee farmers have tried working a lot harder, that has increased their costs, but it has not turned around their unsustainable levels of colony losses. At BuzzCloud we realized that the commercial bee farmers had no idea which colonies most urgently needed their lifesaving manual interventions. We have worked out how to provide that information using our iBuzzHive Platform.

    2.jpg

The iBuzzHive has >5 design features included solely for improving the health and well-being of bee colonies. One of those features is the ability to offer bee farmers a method of up to 100% Varroa Mite killing. Currently, best practice uses a chemical vapor which kills the mites - however, the vapor cannot reach brood larvae in sealed cells, so the mites just carry on multiplying after a brief decrease in numbers.

Then we use electronic sensors inside each hive and transfers their data to our AI servers. AI curates raw sensor data into high-value Smart Alerts. So using the iBuzzHive Platform means bee farmer staff will get a list of hives on their mobile phone marked RED. These hives have colonies about to die, so they must intervene with 24 hours otherwise the colony will die. The next group of hives is marked AMBER, and these hives need intervention within 3 days otherwise the will be marked RED. All healthy hives are marked GREEN.
