    7月29日,“哥大北京之夏”特邀哥伦比亚大学新闻学院教授傅好文(Howard W. French)携他的新书《Everything Under the Heavens》(Knopf出版社, 2017年)做客哥伦比亚大学全球中心 | 北京。该书自出版以来广受好评,并作为头版刊登在《纽约时报》六月书评中。该书也被英国《卫报》选做季度最值得关注书籍之列。傅好文教授将根据自己的新作,剖析历史如何帮助中国成为世界大国。

    On July 29, Professor Howard W. French from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism will visit Columbia Global Centers | Beijing to join an event of "Columbia Beijing Summer" journalism series. He will be sharing his new book, Everything Under the Heavens, and will be talking about how the past helps shape China's push for Global Power.


    The non-fiction book, Everything Under the Heavens: How the Past Helps Shape China's Push for Global Power (Knopf 2017), has been widely and favorably reviewed since its publication and was featured on the front page of the New York Times Book Review in June. It was also selected by The Guardian as one of the season's most notable books.

    傅好文,哥伦比亚大学新闻学院教授。他的新闻生涯始于西非,他为《华盛顿邮报》及多家媒体担任自由记者。1986年,他受聘于《纽约时报》,作为都市记者工作了三年。1990年至2008年,傅好文于中美洲、加勒比地区、西非、日本、朝鲜半岛及中国上海等地分别担任《纽约时报》分社的社长。在此期间傅好文获得了诸多奖项,其中包括两次获得普利策奖提名;两次获得美国海外记者俱乐部奖;以及格兰瑟姆环境奖等。他是A Continent for the Taking: The Tragedy and Hope of Africa(2004年)及China's Second Continent: How a Million Migrants are Building a New Empire in Africa(2014年)的作者,两本书均被多家报纸评为年度最佳非虚构类书籍或位列年度最受关注书单。他最近的著作是《天下万物:历史如何帮助中国力争成为全球强国》 (Knopf出版社, 2017年)。该书自出版以来广受好评,并作为头版刊登在《纽约时报》六月书评中。另外本作也被英国《卫报》选做季度最值得关注书籍之列。


    Howard W. French is a Professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.  His career in journalism began as a freelance reporter for The Washington Post and many other publications in West Africa. He was hired by The New York Times in 1986, and worked as a metropolitan reporter for three years, and from 1990 to 2008 reported for the Times as bureau chief for Central America and the Caribbean, West Africa, Japan and the Koreas, and China in Shanghai. During this time, his work was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize; he was twice the recipient of an Overseas Press Club Award, and he has also won the Grantham Environmental Award, among other awards. He is the author of A Continent for the Taking: The Tragedy and Hope of Africa (2004) and China's Second Continent: How a Million Migrants are Building a New Empire in Africa (2014), each of which was named a non-fiction book of the year or cited among the year's most notable books by several newspapers. His most recent non-fiction book is Everything Under the Heavens: How the Past Helps Shape China's Push for Global Power (Knopf 2017). Heavens has been widely and favorably reviewed since its publication and was featured on the front page of the New York Times Book Review in June. It was also selected by The Guardian as one of the season's most notable books.


    傅好文的作品亦刊登在包括《大西洋月刊》、《纽约书评》、《纽约时报杂志》、《滚石》、《过渡杂志》、《国家杂志》、《高等教育纪事报》、《危机杂志》以及《哥伦比亚新闻评论》等多家刊物上。傅好文同时也是一位纪实摄影师,他的影集《消失中的上海》(2012年)记录了上海中心地带拆迁后老工人宿舍的生活。本影集的摄影作品于亚洲、欧洲及北美洲等地皆有陈列展出,此外他的作品也被多名收藏家和多家博物馆收藏。


    French's writing has also been published in Atlantic, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Transition, The Nation, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Crisis and the Columbia Journalism Review. He is also a documentary photographer, whose book Disappearing Shanghai (2012) captured life in the old workers' quarters of central Shanghai as they were being destroyed. Images from French's work on this project have been displayed in Asia, Europe and North America and acquired by collectors and museums.
